Backyard Theatre Marquee

I've seen just about everything possible on this web site. Quite possibly the only thing I haven't seen yet is a hand made 50's style miniature marquee built from scratch to be used specifically for their byt. I've taken my obssession one step further and have decided to bulild a drive-in theatre marquee for my "drive-way" theatre. Made from 3/4 inch plywood the mini marquee will stand 5 1/2 foot tall and 8 foot long with interchangeable letters. After looking at over 100 different drive-in marquees on the net, I have what i think will be a pretty sharp design. It actually consists of elements of 3 theatre marquees I liked best. Currently under construction in the garage through the winter (sorry honey your car stays outside the next few months), I hope to have pix up asap! Once my landscape business wraps up for the winter, more time can be devoted to getting this finished. If pix of the finished product get enough positive feedback, I would certainly entertain the idea of building, selling and shipping these to other byt operators at a fair cost. We'll see!!

here's mine. it is 8' long x 2' high.
i painted my logo on one end of it and used outdoor letters and the channels to hold them.
there is a thread on here somewhere where folks have posted pictures of theirs.

I've been contemplating having an inflatable Marquee made for the business. I think it would be fun to inflate a 6' Drive-In Marquee on peoples front lawns for their parties or in park-ways for the municipal gigs.
I guess its time to start looking for vendors.

Um, did I say I had an idea? Drat!!!
That will teach me to keep my mouth shut until I've got something developed and in production.
Rich, need a partner on this project or at least an exclusive midwest distributor?

Nice design, Glen. I've also thought about creating a '50s styled drive-in theater sign and looked at many online. I've got an idea for one and will probably start on it in the spring. Keep us updated with pics, please!

Here's mine...I do have the desire to make it more sign-like with LED chaser lights and changeable "now showing" letters, but lack the time/workshop to make it happen. If you build it, I will buy...I will hand over the money without even thinking, for it is money I have and a cool outdoor sign that I lack.

Building a alum. can with NEON, my last job was at a sign company, Neon has always been a big seller.
This Marquee should look great when its done

I've finally started building my byt marquee. I've transferred the drawing on paper to an 8' x 4' sheet of 1/4" plywood and have most of it cut out. It is moving slow due to the hectic holiday schedule in our household (christmas decor, shopping etc.) but will be moving quickly after the holidays. More photos after New Year's. Considered making it larger with neon, chasers etc. but lack the storage room for such a monstrous undertaking. Will include new pix after New Year's.

I am wondering the dollar amounts you guys are spending in creating your marquees? Are you guys doing this for under $100, just under $500 or more then $500?

Below is our Small entrance A Farme
I will be building a 1940's designed Neon Marque this winter, about 7 feet tall
500.00 will cover just the glass neon on mine, aprox 1,500.00 for the alum. can
I have several neon transformrs I will use, hopefully they are still in good condition pulled from working sign boxes. The zip track will be a extra but pretty cheap and a set of Letters & Numbers.
I have been out of the sign buisness for many years but have a lot of parts left over, so I am guessing in the $2,000 range , probably 4 to 600 lbs
This will be mounted on a portable farm skid and be pulled out from the barn with my Ford 8000
Lets talk about the expensive stuff................SOUND EQUIPMENT !!!!!
Happy Holidays to all

Here is a link to a site where a potential sign can be had.
Apply to a plywood backing and you have a 12 ft. entrance sign.
http://www.stumpsprom.com/prom/At-the-Hop-DriveIn-Kit.cfm
I am ordering the sign alone and hope to mount it to a wall just off my theater entry.

The expenses for my marquee will be for the two sheets of plywood, paint, and changeable letters. It will be attractive but not over the top for a byt. You lucky folks who have sign experience really have an advantage in this category.
