Sunday night my friend calls me and said he had just picked up The Last Waltz which is a concert video directed by Martin Scorsese featuring The Band and asked me if it might be possible to set up Whirling Dervish Drive-In and I agreed. We decided  to make it a cookout, I made a huge crockpot with chili and he said he was making sausages on the grill and he had some great wines. We started early and after sound check we put the Video on around 8:00 pm. One of the neighbors was having a get together as well  (we could faintly hear a group of people talking) and while getting levels correct I heard someone scream "turn that $#!% down" and I did. Thinking nothing more about it we went on with the food and wine. Next thing I hear is someone crawling through the brush on the other side of the fence and then a head pops over the fence and you hear "is everything over here OK?" We look over and it's the police but instead of having a stern look on his face it was more like shock. My buddy runs over and says "we're not breaking ordinence, it's only 8:00 and we'll turn it down if it's too loud....is it too loud?" The cop looks at him and says....."Nope, I don't think so!" My friend says "I know you....it's me Barry!" and the cop replies "Yes I know!" my friend responds with "the neighbor has my phone number and can call if there is a problem" to which the cop responded that "it wasn't this neighbor who complained". Then my buddy starts grinning and asks the cop "Well, what do you think?" the cops responds with "that is amazing...when are you going to invite me over to watch a movie with you guys?" We fell out...the cop then told us all to have a great night and just be careful of the levels but then commented again how great it sounded and left. I guess he wasn't thinking when he heard the music that it was going to be a group of 50ish folks drinking wine and you could tell by the look on his face he wasn't expecting a 10 1/2 foot hi-def movie screen. Let's just say I watched the levels closely for the rest of the evening...lol

... lol... to funny..Good Times!  Cops generally are not hater's when it is wholesome fun. They are real people too with the same likes and dislikes. And who doesn't like the outdoor drive-in feel.
Great story and thanks for sharing!

Our neighbor is a NYC Finest... across the street is NYC's Bravest, etc...  We end up bringing the BYT between our houses...

We are fortunate... Long Island properties are small (less than a 1/4 acre in my neighborhood) and the houses are relatively close together.  We talk to the other neighbors and they all think it's great- no noise complaints at all- even after asking them directly.

The key is not to abuse a good thing.

Well that's just it....we have the neighbors over all the time. And one's that have said they heard it and haven't been by get an invite! With my buddy being one of the best known wine educators in Coconut Grove (and very outspoken politically) we know quite a few of the officers. We are still curious who called in the noise complaint so early and would like to invite them over as well.
